The 2017 CrossFit Games kick off today as I write this blog post looking back on some of my favorite sports event photography. The Games are the final of three stages in the global competition. I thought it would be fitting to look back on where it all begins in Stage 1, The Open. I thoroughly enjoyed photographing the Open at CrossFit of Aces in March of this year. What follows are highlights from “Friday Night Lights”, the workout/competition/spectator event at CrossFit of Aces every Friday night during the open.
Open 17.2
The workouts are described in shortcut notation (17 = year, 2 = second week). This workout included walking lunges with dumbbells (50 lb for men, 35 lb for women), toes to bar or bar muscle-ups, and power cleans. More details can be found on the CrossFit Games site.
Open 17.3
This workout included chest-to-bar pull-ups and squat snatches. Details about rounds and reps can be found on the CrossFit Games site.
Open 17.4
This workout consisted of as many rounds and reps as possible of deadlifts, wall balls, rowing, and handstand push-ups. More details about the rep scheme can be found on the CrossFit Games site.
Open 17.5
This workout consisted of 10 rounds of thrusters and double-unders. More details about the movements and the weights used can be found on the CrossFit Games site.
Why I Love Sports Event Photography
The athletes were impressive, but I love the atmosphere in the gym on these Friday Night Lights Events. The support from fellow athletes who spend their Friday nights coming to the gym to act as judges, sit on the sidelines and cheer for their fellow athletes is something special to observe.
