The CrossFit bug has bitten the family…and that includes my littlest, who participated in a CrossFit Kids Competition last month. The “Back to School Throwdown” was hosted by CrossFit of Aces on August 22. The event included multiple divisions so that young athletes ranging from preschool to teenagers could participate.
The preschoolers kicked off the morning with a course to showcase the skills they learned in class all summer. Included were box jumps, a balance beam, and an agility ladder.
The next group to race was the CrossFit Kids, Level 1 and Level 2 athletes. I have to admit, I have a favorite in this group. My little guy worked his booty off that morning, and I could not be more proud of his efforts. The Level 1 and Level 2 kids got to play a very physical sort of Tetris game: First perform a prescribed number of squats, kettle bell swings, and burpees. Then, grab a block, run it across the gym, and deposit it there. Repeat this process, stacking blocks until time is up.
The athletic performance group was serious business. This group performed rowing, burpees, jump rope, and more.
This post is just a sampling of the event and the skills the kids learn and practice. I enrolled my kiddo because in this event and in CrossFit Kids because I believe it is a program that will help him develop both his physical skills and his self confidence.
